Доверяй, но проверяй, this is an old Russian proverb that was made quite famous by former US president Ronald Reagan. He used this phrase frequently while in conversation with former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev.
Не хочу учиться, а хочу жениться! (Meaning: I do not want to study. I want to marry!)
Russian playwriter Denis Fonvizin was quite famous for his comedies. This proverb is said to make fun of a person who fails to plan correctly and is mostly used by school teachers as a mode of scolding lazy pupils.
Любовь зла, полюбишь и козла. (Translation: Love is so cruel, you could fall in love with a goat.) Meaning: Love is blind.
Козел this word in Russian is used for goat, but as slang. This is another method that refers to a male in a less favorable manner. Consequently, this saying means that love is so blind that it could make one fall in love with the wrong guy.
Яблоко от яблони недалеко падает. (Meaning: The apple does not fall far from the tree.)
Similar to the English version, this suggests, that the kids grow up to be like their parents.
Делать из мухи слона. (Translation: To make an elephant out of a fly.) English Meaning: To make a mountain out of a molehill.
Simply put, if someone takes something minor and exaggerates it until it becomes a huge deal, this phrase expresses that sentiment.
