These are some of the names or brands that immediately come to your mind when one thinks of Germany and the Germans.
Similarly, you will be surprised to know that the German language has some cool fun facts, that you need to know. Here, take a look at them.
Each Noun is Capitalized
In German, nouns are completely capitalized. Unlike English, this rule is applicable not only to proper names; there are no exceptions.
It Has a Unique Letter
German uses the Latin alphabet. It has, though, an additional consonant: the symbol ß, called “Eszett”. The letter never appears at the beginning of the word and, following a long vowel or diphthong, and takes the form of a double-s.
German Language Has 3 Genders
In several Romance languages, nouns are either male or female, making it difficult enough for native English speakers. German goes even one step further, a noun can also be neuter. Gender of a word is determined solely by grammar. For instance, “Das Mädchen” (the girl) is neuter, even though it refers to the female person.
The Longest Word in German
German is famous for endlessly long words. One of the longest and toughest is “Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigungszuständigkeitsübertragungsverordnung” (regulation on the delegation of authority concerning land conveyance permissions). This neologism comes through officialese. But do not panic, such tapeworm words can almost always be broken down into their more intelligible parts. For instance, “Staubsauger” (vacuum cleaner) combined of the words “dust” and “sucking”.
Words You Can Only Find in German
Certain terms do not exist in any other language. “Fernweh” (having a travel bug, lusting after an adventure) is the contrast of “Heimweh” (homesickness). And, “fremdschämen” refers to shame felt on another individual’s behalf.
German is Not Spoken Just in Germany
German is the most widely spoken language in the whole European Union, more than Spanish, French and also, English. It is the official language of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein and1 of the official languages in Switzerland and Luxembourg. German comes 11th in the list of the most widely spoken languages across the world.
